FBC Melgar
Melgar had a disappointing Apertura campaign by their standards.
Finishing 6th and ending up eight points behind the top spot is a gap too wide for a team with their ambitions. A key reason for their struggles was the absence of their main attacking threat, Bernardo Cuesta, who missed a large portion of the first half of the season due to injury.
He has now returned, recently gaining minutes, and is expected to be fully ready for the start of the Clausura.
Cajamarca’s Apertura was even more underwhelming. Defensively, they were one of the worst teams in the league, conceding 34 goals in 18 matches the second-worst record overall.
The only bright spot for them was the form of experienced striker Jarlin Quintero, who managed to score six goals despite the team’s poor overall performance.
What we say
Melgar to Win
Despite going four games without a win to close out the Apertura, Melgar now has key players back from injury and suspension.
They’ll be eager to start the Clausura strong, knowing every point counts if they want to stay in contention at the top of the Aggregate Table.
While Cajamarca can be dangerous in attack, their defensive issues are likely to be exposed against a more complete and now healthier Melgar side. History also favors Melgar they’re unbeaten in their last six matches against Cajamarca, with four wins and two draws. Their last visit ended in a dominant 2-6 victory.
